Hope Still Hypnosis
Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis
What hypnosis feels like, how it works, and what to expect.

Most people arrive with the same handful of questions, and a few misconceptions picked up from stage shows. These are the answers.
How Hypnosis Works
How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis is a state of heightened focus, characterized by increased Alpha and Theta brainwaves, during which the normally active rational mind is in a resting state, allowing access to the subconscious mind. The conscious ego less actively controlling and more receptive, allowing the subconscious to open to new possibilities. This access allows for new beliefs, acceptance of a new reality, and consequent change in normal waking awareness to occur, without the deflection of suggestions due to mental activity. It could be compared to updating software on your laptop. You cannot be using a program while you update its software. The subconscious is the software update, and you can reopen the program with even better features.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis feels like a relaxed state between sleep and wakefulness.
Is hypnosis like sleep?
Not exactly. You are deeply relaxed, but still mentally alert. It feels like a state between wakefulness and sleep, calm, inward, and focused.
During a Session
Am I still in control during hypnosis?
Yes! You are in complete control; you will not do anything in a state of hypnosis that you would not be ok with doing in a full waking state. In fact, certain regions of your prefrontal cortex (part of the Central Executive Network involved in attention and decision making) are more active in a state of hypnosis.
Can I get stuck in a state of hypnosis?
No, you are able to disconnect from a hypnotic state at will.
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes, hypnosis is a safe, natural state that most people experience daily (like daydreaming or being absorbed in a task). It is non-invasive and used solely for positive, client-directed change.
There is a longer piece on is hypnosis safe covering the common myths and where they came from.
What Hypnosis Can Help With
Can hypnosis help with anxiety?
It is one of the most common reasons people get in touch. The work is aimed at the subconscious patterns behind anxious thinking. Many clients report feeling calmer, more focused, and more resilient afterward.
The full detail is on the hypnosis for stress and anxiety page.
For smoking, see quit smoking with hypnosis.
Getting Started
How many hypnosis sessions will I need?
It depends on your goal. Some clients see results in 1 to 2 sessions, while others benefit from a multi-session package to reinforce progress over time. We'll discuss a plan based on your unique needs during your first appointment.
Can I do hypnosis online?
Yes, online hypnosis sessions follow the same format as in-person sessions and are just as effective. All you need is a quiet space and a strong internet connection.
Can I gift a session to someone I care about?
Absolutely! That said, hypnosis will not work for something someone doesn't truly want to change. Meaning, if you want your spouse to stop smoking, but they do not want it, no amount of hypnosis will change that.
Session lengths and prices are on the booking page, where you can also see session pricing.
Results vary for each person. The most critical element of success in hypnosis is your desire to change a behavior or experience growth. Our services offer supportive, non-medical care.
Kind Reviews From Our Clients
I had a great experience with Hope. She guided me through a hypnosis session and has a lovely, patient and kind way of handling life and different situations. She was in touch with me before our session and we spoke at length, she was very prepared and informed when our in-person session took place. She has also followed up several times afterwards which is very comforting and supportive. I would highly recommend using Hope for hypnosis!
